What if some of the greatest lessons about humanity could come from the smallest creatures on Earth? I first met Miami-based artist Stella Chrone at one of our local gallery openings and was immediately captivated by both her artwork and her remarkable personal story. It’s a story of perseverance, exploration and an extraordinary amount of curiosity. Mix that with a calling to work with glass and living ant colonies, and you have one of the most unique artists in South Florida! Working at the intersection of art, biology and philosophy, Stella creates extraordinary hand-blown glass sculptures that become living environments for ants, challenging us to reconsider how we view society, freedom and the world around us.
Stella’s artistic journey is deeply connected to her unconventional upbringing. Raised within a highly controlling religious community, she grew up in an environment where beliefs, behavior and personal freedom were carefully defined by others. After leaving that world in 2022, she began questioning the invisible boundaries that govern human existence. Her fascination with ants offered an unexpected perspective. These tiny creatures build elaborate societies, communicate, cooperate and accomplish extraordinary things through collective behavior. For Stella, the parallels between ant colonies and human society became an irresistible subject for artistic exploration and a way of making sense of her own remarkable journey.
What makes Stella’s work so extraordinary is that her art is literally alive! Using intricate borosilicate glass structures, she creates transparent habitats where ants establish colonies and continually reshape their surroundings. The glass becomes a powerful metaphor: the ants inhabit an environment without understanding the invisible walls that contain them. Are humans really so different? How many of our own boundaries are created by the societies we inhabit, the beliefs we inherit or the systems we rarely question? Stella designs the environment, but the ants become collaborators in creating the artwork itself. It’s an extraordinary marriage of artistic craftsmanship, scientific curiosity and philosophical exploration.
This week, Don’t Tell Me How to Art introduces Stella Chrone as our featured Artist of the Week, exploring her remarkable upbringing, her fascination with ants and her provocative observations about humanity. During our visits to Miami’s Glass Bubble studio, we witnessed the delicate craftsmanship behind her sculptures and the fascinating process of introducing living colonies into these extraordinary glass environments. Follow Stella’s story across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube as we discover an artist whose perseverance and curiosity have transformed an unconventional life journey into an equally unconventional artistic vision. Perhaps the real question isn’t whether the ants can see the glass, but whether we can recognize the invisible walls surrounding our own lives. Don’t Tell Me How to Art, Miami!
